How to Identify and Prevent Skin Cancer
Curable, when detected early, skin cancer is caused by the abnormal and uncontrolled growth of skin cells.
There are several types of skin cancer, divided into two main groups: melanomas and carcinomas. Melanomas and carcinomas are quite different, from the appearance of the lesion to the prognosis. Check it out below:
Carcinomas. It is the most common type, representing 95% of malignant skin tumors. They are directly related to high exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.
Some types of skin cancer can be related to infection with certain types of viruses. The symptoms usually manifest as rough skin or small sores that bleed easily and do not heal. They are almost always located in areas of skin exposed to the sun on a daily basis (face, ears, bald spot, shoulders, etc.), but they can appear anywhere. They are more common in people over 50 years of age. They don't usually hurt, even in more advanced stages.
Melanoma is less frequent (5%) than other skin tumors, but it tends to have more aggressive behavior. It originates from melanocytes, the cells responsible for producing the pigment (melanin) that gives the skin its color. Therefore, they usually manifest as dark spots (black or brown). The association of melanoma with the sun is well known, especially with episodes of intense exposure, but this type of skin cancer also has a strong genetic influence. Melanoma can appear on healthy skin, over existing moles, or even in birthmarks. It is found in both exposed and covered areas and often affects younger people. It is more common on the skin but can appear in places such as the eye, mouth, meninges, nails, and other areas.
